THE RESCUE OF JOSEPH KONY’S CHILD SOLDIERS: Chicago
invisiblechildren.org
Please look and check it out, and let the child soldiers have a proper childhood, not fighting an adults war
A few days ago I visited those who have been camping out in various locations around Chicago for ‘The Rescue’ demonstrations that have been organized by Invisible Children. If you still haven’t seen the video on their site, I highly recommend taking the time to educate yourself on the issue. This is a HUMANITARIAN issue, not a political one. People in numerous cities across the globe banded together on April 25th and abducted themselves until someone in the public eye ‘rescued’ them from their sites. As of Tuesday there were only 2 cities left to be rescued. I decided to visit those that had been camping out in what became the last city to be recognized, Chicago. (I’ve posted some pictures in the entries below.)
Today Oprah Winfrey ‘Rescued’ those remaining of the self abducted and covered the demonstration live, bringing the issue out of the dark and into the hearts and homes of millions across America. This is a very important step in building awareness around the atrocities taking place against thousands of innocent children and their families in Uganda and the surrounding area.
One of the most moving attributes of this story is basking in the reality that in today’s day and age, our voices CAN be heard. This not only marks a turning point in the war in Uganda, but also the war on indifference. Generations that have come before ours may be skeptical about us. Many believe that technology has moved our culture into a very fragile state. And I don’t disagree. The internet and television certainly have their downfalls and ill influence on modern society in many ways. Face to face conversation is now text messaging. A library is now a search on wikipedia. Your identity is now a Myspace page. However, what has been accomplished today with The Rescue’s efforts is a beaming example of the good that we can do when our minds and hearts place our compassion in the driver’s seat, keeping pace with our advancing technology.
The combination of blogs and twitters WITH good old fashioned passion and peaceful demonstration have set a whole new standard for our generation.
Together we can accomplish anything.
